Moms everywhere were overjoyed when the Gap Crew introduced Old Navy, and decided to include some younger sailors in on their cute casual collection. With cheerful prints, stripes galore, and bold colors (at very reasonable prices,) their kids line very rarely disappoints. The fact that the clothing line parallels the adult trends, is very attractive to the youngest shoppers, certainly. The price point is the tipping point for the ones with the deep pockets and the credit cards. With this middle child shopping conundrum gaining momentum all across the fashion world, J. Crew soon followed suit, and with Crew Cuts (their kids collection) they cross referenced taller, older sport and tailored much of it for a shorter, younger sportser. Although a bit pricier, their pieces are very unique, very J. Crewish, and that makes little girls feel more grown up. Not too grown up, mind you, as the preppy influence is still very classic, worn by adults or kids. Ralph Lauren kids line is a perfect example of how a middle school boy will always be able to dress up like the Freshmen – the styles are staid, tried and true and for the sort that enjoy a specific trend, there is a retailer out there ready to make everyone feel part of the ‘in crowd.’
Sharlotte, is a brand ambassador of sorts for all those adult/kids clothing designers. Dressed down or dressed up, her style and mine can often mimic one another. Particularly as we often both set out to shop, both sets of shops. We do belong to the same ‘familiar gene pool’ and jeans are certainly a favorite of ours. Some of the kids jean styles nowadays threaten to outshine trendsetting grown-ups and kids who have trouble fitting into smaller sizes will find racks of ample-cut clothes cool enough to keep them in the in-crowd. On occasion we are in the same stores, in different dressing rooms, trying on the same items.
And so, on a recent girls day out on the town, Sharlotte is actually styling a really cute winter jean ensemble. Her jacket is J. Crew, jeans are Old Navy Kids, down puffer is Old Navy Adults. Spoiler alert – each of these items are/were mine. We styled her in this bigger denim package that morning and it all looked so good on her, and fit her so well, I happily stuffed the jeans, the older jacket and the vest in her brand new Lilly Pulitzer kids shopping bag with some of the other grown up goodies that we both bought and she wears so well. We agreed that the idea to mesh the muses is jean-ious!
